The Consequences of Neglecting Flossing

Flossing complements brushing by cleaning tight spaces between teeth that brushing misses. It removes plaque and food particles that can cause dental issues if left unchecked.

Consequences of Skipping Flossing

  • Plaque buildup occurs when you skip flossing, forming a sticky film of bacteria that can lead to oral health problems. If not removed, plaque hardens into tartar, which requires professional removal and contributes to gum disease and cavities.

  • Gum disease, caused by inflammation from plaque and tartar, starts with gingivitis, characterized by red, swollen gums that may bleed during brushing or flossing. If untreated, it progresses to periodontitis, causing severe gum damage and tooth loss.

  • Cavities are common in tooth interspaces due to plaque-produced acids eroding enamel.

  • Food particles and bacteria trapped between teeth cause persistent bad breath.

  • Inflammation and infection from gum disease can cause pain while eating or brushing, impacting quality of life.

Benefits of Daily Flossing

Flossing daily is crucial for maintaining healthy gums and overall oral well-being. It prevents inflammation and infection, preserves gum tissue, and reduces the risk of gum disease. Flossing removes food particles and plaque from tooth interspaces, lowering the likelihood of cavities. It complements brushing and mouthwash, providing a comprehensive approach to oral hygiene. Consistent flossing reduces the risk of costly dental procedures and results in fresher breath.

Flossing Techniques

  • String Floss: Use a 18-inch piece of string floss to wrap around your middle finger only, using thumb and index finger to ‘drive.’ Gently slide it between your teeth, forming a C-shape around each tooth for thorough cleaning.

  • Floss Picks: Floss picks are convenient and easy to use, especially for those who struggle with traditional flossing. They allow for easy access to tight spaces.

  • Water Flossers: Water flossers use a stream of pulsating water to remove plaque and food particles. They are especially helpful for individuals with braces or dental implants.  They are not a replacement for string floss, but an excellent addition.
